Andrew HOLMES

Né en 1947 à Bromsgrove, dans le Worcestershire, Andrew Holmes s’installe à Londres en 1966 et fréquente l’Architectural Association.

Il est surtout connu pour une série de 150 dessins au crayon explorant l’infrastructure mobile apparemment anonyme des villes. Toutefois, son travail englobe également la gravure, la photographie, le cinéma et le design. Son travail n’offre pas la qualité unique de l’artisanat, mais les éléments de trois traditions : l’art est une preuve, et une capacité à sélectionner des objets significatifs, des choses issues de l’expérience ; l’art est le résidu de l’engagement des systèmes existants avec des techniques et des processus mécaniques particuliers ; et l’art offre la possibilité de fabriquer de nouvelles versions de la réalité.
Ces procédures, il les organise en tant que Messages, Arrangements et Nonuments selon les principes de l’Informalisme.
L’œuvre, sous toutes ses formes, a été exposée et publiée à grande échelle pendant cinquante-cinq ans.

Holmes est professeur émérite d’architecture à l’Université Brookes d’Oxford, professeur invité à la Technische Universitaat de Berlin et chercheur invité au Getty Research Institute. Il vit et travaille à Londres.

Born in 1947 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, Andrew Holmes moved to London in 1966, and attended the Architectural Association.

He is best known for a series of 150 pencil drawings exploring the apparently anonymous mobile infrastructure of cities. In addition however his work encompasses printmaking, photography, film, and design. The work offers not the unique quality of handicraft, but the elements of three traditions: that art is evidence, and of an ability to select significant objects, things from experience; that art is the residue of engaging the existing systems with particular mechanical techniques and processes; and that art provides the possibility of fabricating new versions of reality.
These procedures he organises as Messages, Arrangements, and Nonuments under the principles of Informalism.
The work in all its forms has been exhibited and published widely for fifty-five years. Holmes is Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, Guest Professor at the Technische Universitaat, Berlin, and a Visiting Scholar at the Getty Research Institute. He lives and works in London.
